Maayong gab-i! I don't have much time and can't say everything..but all the pictures should help! This week was a good one. I can't believe another transfer has come and gone. I'm still here in Bacolod 2nd Ward and my new companion is sweet Sister Garcia. She is from Pangasinan, Philippines. We actually go home at the same time! This week we went to the Jara Family Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I love them so much I wish it could be everyday of the week. We taught about the word of wisdom and found out Sister Rhoda drinks coffee everyday. We invited her to slowly try to stop, but told her it would take some time. The family came to church the next day, and we could tell Rhoda wasn't feeling very well. We asked, and she said she just had a little headache. When we got home, Sister Christensen realized that she had probably tried to stop drinking coffee cold turkey. We went later that night, and she was asleep in bed. Her son Mark told us she had been throwing up, and had an awful headache the whole day, because she didn't want to drink coffee. Sister Christensen and I were almost in tears. It was such a testimony to us that she knows this is true. We ended up teaching the family anyway, and extended baptismal dates to her 4 kids for Oct 5th! This week Allan and his dad Tay Edgardo were also baptized! It was such a happy day. Early in the morning we all went to go clean the Baptismal font. After we finished Allan stayed even longer, just so he could clean the Sacrament hall with Bishop Delatore. Allan, and Tay Edgardo both bore such sweet and strong testimonies of the Church of Jesus Christ. Afterwards Allan came up to me and said he didn't get to say everything he wanted to in his testimony, because he got so nervous. He is so Bakod. Bishop kept telling us he'll be a future leader of the church for sure :) I love this Gospel, and the change I get to see in people everyday as we teach them. Padayon land kamo ah! Palangga ta kamo man! Halong ha! Sister Adams So many pictures haha......... A couple of pictures from last week.....

Howdy! It's September here in the Philippines, which means the Christmas season has officially started! This week was a good one and thank goodness not near as busy as last week! We had back to back exchanges again this week. I went on Exchanges with Sister Ellis and Sister Parinas. It was so much fun getting to go with another one of my past companions. Sister Ellis was my Second half trainer after she herself had just got out of training. I remember that the first week together we thought we were going to die haha. It was such a blessing to see the growth from where we once were to now. Just a good reminder how far we've come. Everyday this week we went to the Tuerca Family to prepare them for Baptism next week on Sept. 7th.(Gracee's Birthday just became an even better day) This Saturday we went over for their BIQ (Baptismal Interview Questions) THEY ARE SO READY. At the end we looked to each of them and asked why do you want to be baptized? Tay Edgardo looked at us and said he wants a new start and to become clean. Then we turned to Allan and asked. He looked at us and said, "Sisters I want to do what Heavenly Father asks, to live with Him again in the Celestial Kingdom" I'd be lying if I didn't say we almost started crying. We had tears in our eyes. Richie was very honest with us and said that he doesn't feel ready yet but still wants to be baptized. We know it will happen in the right time:) It's also been so cool to see the their excitement spread to the whole family. Now we are not only teaching Allan, Edgardo and Richie but their two sisters (Christie and Geraldine) and their families as well. It's been so cool to see them share their experiences with them and because of that their sisters hearts were opened to our message. I say it too much but boy do I love them! This week we also had the new couple missionaries, Elder and Sister Penrod come out to work with us. It was their first time ever going out to work with Missionaries and it was so much fun! While the Elders Interviewed Allan and Edgardo we went to the Morales family with them. It was the cutest thing when all of Karen Joy's kids started calling Sister Penrod their lola (Grandma). (I'll send pics next week tani, we forgot the adaptor.) We also had a really fun FHE with the Jara and Geroche family. (I will also hopefully send pics next week of that) Love you all! Take care and have a great week! Sister Adams Sister Christensen sends me (Em's mom) her emails each week. This made me smile..... "Funny things this week: We played basketball with some crazy Filipino boys that were shocked with Sister Adams skills. "Howdy!" -what an American man from Philadelphia said to us when we said "Maayong hapon" to him..oh joy..so funny :)" The Dolar family... They got baptized! Sweet notes from Marissa. I am so grateful for technology, and that she keeps in touch, so I can pass on to Emily. Em was so happy to hear about their baptism news! She cried tears of joy.
Maayong gab-i! Kamusta kamo? Abaw sa diin ko magsugod. ....Well this week was insane. It was probably one of the craziest and most challenging weeks of my entire mission...pero buhi pa kami Tuesday we we started out with a District Council training for Magsungay District! The next day started our back to back exchanges with the Sante Fe Sisters. Wednesday, Sister Sales my baby came to work with me in Bacolod 2nd Ward. It was so fun to get to be companions again, even if it was just for a day. I love her so much! Thursday I went to Santa Fe to work with Sister Caguntas. Their area is beautiful. I was so happy to be back in the bukid! It was also super fun staying in their house because it was me and 5 Filipinas. All five of them sure had a good time teasing me, but hey, at least I ate real good food that night! We were able to teach the Tuerca Family on Saturday. We showed up to their balay and Edgardo was so surprised to see us because it had been raining and he didn't think we would still be out working. We said "Rain or Shine Tay, we're here for you!" and then he told us to go call for Allan so that we could teach them! We went over to find Allan at his older sisters house just across the way. Allan decided that it would be better off if we all met together in their sisters house, so that's what we did. Richie and Tay Edgardo came and we got to meet Christie and her daughter KC. We prayed and followed-up with their praying and reading. They love the Book of Mormon and always ask such great questions. Allan had lots of questions about Jews and Gentiles and we then had an awesome discussion about the Gathering of Israel, It was really neat. Last week we also gave them study journals and pens and now Richie writes down all the scriptures he likes. They are so pure. Since it was Christie's first time she started asking a lot of questions about the Book of Mormon and what priesthood was. After further explaining about it, it seemed to just immediately click with her. Her heart was open and the Holy Ghost was able to testify. After explaining a little bit more of the Priesthood she casually said "Aww that means that Allan can baptize us after they get baptized?!" and then she continued saying, "I wish my husband was here so he can change and baptize me and my kids." We were SO SURPRISED..... We had just met her. She asked for a copy of the Book of Mormon, and said they would read and try to come to church. This family has my whole heart. I love them. We also went to the Jara Family. Dan and Gamay came (An older couple that got baptized back in March) It was awesome because even Rodney, the father of the Jara family was there. His first time EVER joining the lesson. Prayers were answered and more miracles. It was a challenging lesson, but also a great one. The Spirit was present because we did our best to avoid contention. Rodney will take some time to develop a testimony, but he seems more open-minded than he did a month ago. More miracles. Well our Saturday didn't really happen as we had planned. This was the day Sister Christensen and I really sat down and asked ourselves is there a reason we run out of time, all the time? We had so many people to teach this day and we were so excited to get going, especially because we were back together in our area after 2 days of not being together, but every time we looked at our watches we would be so surprised, because what seemed to be 5 minutes had already been an hour. We got overwhelmed with how much we had to get done with little to no time. We were really discouraged and started feeling like we were doing something wrong. I realize now, just as everything else, it's a test of our faith to continue to give our best everyday, even if the hours are small. If we give our best, that's all God asks for. The coolest part is, if you just continue on, you still see the miracles just as we did this week. This Sunday was also the craziest Sunday I have ever had. The Morales family, The Tuerca family(Allan, Richie, and Edgardo) The Jara family( Rhoda, Cathy, Mark, Julie Mae, and John Kain) came to church. Sister Christensen and I gave talks on missionary work and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Allan and Edgardo took the sacrament for the first time, because they thought they had to be members. Allan afterward told us with the biggest smile on his face, "Sisters I felt so good as I took the Sacrament, I'm so happy." Because we were sitting on the stand we noticed how deeply in thought they were and how seriously they took partaking of the Sacrament. It reminded me of our Zone Conference this week. I loved how we talked about how we can make sacred things more spiritual. President talked a lot about the Sense of the Sacred by D Todd Christofferson. Ginhambal niya "If a person does not appreciate holy things, He will lose them. When absent of a feeling of Reverence, We grow casual in attitude and lax in conduct. Eventually it will lead to no accountability to God and those things that are sacred will become diminished and forgotten." As I watched them partake of the Sacrament, They truly had a sense of what was sacred. It made me realize how many of us, labi na gid myself, grow casual in the Ordinance of the Sacrament and forget just how sacred and special it should be. It should be the spiritual highlight of every week. If we do the spiritual preparation required, we can be just like Allan and say, "I feel so good, I'm so happy." Love you all! Sister Adams Em has not wanted to think about coming home the last few weeks, but she knew that she needed to, if she were to come home early for school. She didn't like the idea of coming home a whole transfer early, so after talking to her president, he told her that there were missionaries going home on her bday, Dec. 18th, and some were going home Dec. 23rd.
This is what she said this week, "I decided to stay. I can always go to school, but I will never get this back." I cried as I read, because I am so happy that she loves her mission, the gospel, and the people so much! It will be interesting to see what experiences she will have, that she might have missed had she not been delayed from her shoulder surgery. She thinks her date to come home will be January 11th.? She will take second block classes at UVU, starting March 1st. Abaw! This week flew by. The Tuerca Family. Tiy Edgardo and Allan already accepted baptism but want to pray about when they need to be baptized. (Tiy Edgardo is still set on having his Baptism on his birthday, October 20) At the end of our lesson we also extended a baptismal invitation to Richie, because for the past couple times we have gone to visit them, he was sick. That's when he sincerely asked how he would know if he received an answer to his prayer about whether he should be baptized. We started to explain about the Holy Ghost, but the coolest part was when his own brother Allan turned to him and started testifying of how he came to know it was true through his feelings from the Holy Ghost. It was sincere, and honest, and so powerful coming from his own brother. I couldn't wipe the smile from my face. I was so happy. A testimony is strengthened and solidified as it is given. The Chua Family and Priesthood Blessings. So this family was a referral from our dear Mary Jane Francisco, the wife of our ward mission leader. They deliver water jugs to this family, and we decided last Sunday to go visit, and now we are teaching them! The father of the family just had a horrible stroke this past April, and the wife and daughter take care of him currently. We finished teaching them lesson 2 about the Plan of Salvation and now we have their new house helper wanting to learn more. Not only that, but this past Saturday, the whole bishopric came to their house with us and gave Bobby Chua a priesthood blessing. Bobby cried, and it was really touching. He doesn't know how to talk again yet, but he understands and feels the spirit.🙂 The Kantara Family. The Kantara family was found last transfer while they were buying tickets for something....I think? Sister Zollinger and Sister Christensen never could find the time to go back and find where they live. Sister Christensen said they had put them in the plan for the longest time, but it wasn't until this week we finally found them and went back to teach. They were so surprised to see us, because it was so long ago when they had talked with them and asked if they wanted to know more. It was so amazing, and the spirit was so strong as we taught about the Plan of Salvation. If it wasn't the right time teach them back then, it definitely is now:). The Jara Family FHE. This Saturday we had a big FHE with the Jara family. Members came with rice, and we came with Sudan (4 big bangros) It was great, and they were all willing to have a FHE with other ward members, and It was so much fun, and a big break for her kids and husband. They started to be taught not long ago and have been making slow progress ever since. Rhoda, the mom has been going to church for the past few weeks and loves it. She started to read the Book of Mormon and we feel like she truly believes it is true. It's going to take a while, because her family are devoted Seventh day Adventists. With Rhoda leading the way, I think they will begin to also develop testimonies. If anyone has any tips on how to fit everything into 24 hours, we'd love some advice. This next week consists of a district council training (I have to train), 2 days of exchanges, zone conference, speaking next Sunday, and then giving a training with the ZL's and stake president at a stake missionary fireside that same Sunday! Please pray for us haha. I love being able to see God's hand every day in the work, even in the smallest of ways. Every day we come home exhausted, because of all we have to do, but prayer, and daily tender mercies keep us going.
Padayon lang kamo ah. Palangga ta kamo pirme! Sister Adams (We got to talk to Em on Google Hangouts for a little bit. She said that the people generously feed them all of the time. She had bangros 3 times in one day. It is her favorite fish to eat so it was great. She said she eats a lot of things that she has no idea what it is, and prefers it that way. :) She loves most of the things she eats. She said they are teaching around 80 people right now, and seeing miracles as they are so busy with other duties.) Hello everyone! This week I got a little bit more used to the big city. I still can't figure out the whole jeepney route, but hey that's what I have a companion for. This area is really progressing and even though we were so busy with our first MLC, and exchanges, typhoon type weather, and flooding, and more sickness, we are amazed at the people that seem to pop out of nowhere for us to teach. (I asked her if she had showers and hot water now that she is in the big city?) "I still have good ole bucket showers whoot, and no, you never get hot water here haha." This week Sister Christensen and I also switched places. I was sick all last week and she was sick all this week. It all happened when we went to go visit a cute family that has a barbecue stand where they sell chicken feet, dinuguan (pigs blood), and tinae (chicken intestines). We stopped to talk and decided we should probably buy something....we went with the tinae. Later we came to find out it wasn't fully cleaned on the inside of the intestines, because Sister Christensen's stomach started hurting. Even with all of that we still saw so many miracles. One of those miracles is the Tuerca family, Edgardo, and his two sons, Richie and Allen. We met them a couple of weeks ago, while their father was pumping water to do laundry. They are so pure. I can't think of any other word to describe them. Everything we teach clicks for them and I have never had someone I'm teaching, love the Book of Mormon as much as they do. They all came to church, and accepted baptismal dates for September. The only problem is, Edgardo wants to be baptized on his birthday in October, but Allen stopped, looked at him, and said layo gid ina! (That's so far away!) Hopefully we can just convince him to get the Melchizedek Priesthood on his birthday and get baptized sooner haha. This week we also had the baptism of a cute 9 year old girl named Maxim. The end of last transfer her grandpa came to the missionaries, and asked if she could be baptized. She has been going to church for years now,and everyone just thought she was a member. We started teaching her everyday last week, and this Saturday she finally became an official member. Time is flying by.... I'm loving every minute of being a missionary! Love you all! Have a great week! Sister Adams Maayong aga This week was good and the transfer started out on a good note. We had a Baptism and I got food poisoning haha. Bacolod is a whole lot different than what I'm used to. It's a whole lot hotter, & dirtier, we ride in nothing but jeepney's, and there's not a single sugar cane field in sight, but the people we're teaching are pretty awesome. This week we taught Edgardo and his two sons, Allen and Richie in their late 20's. When we first stopped by their house, Allen and Richie didn't look too excited to see us, but Edgardo was all for it. We taught the Plan of Salvation about kon sa diin kita naghalin, but after that, they didn't want to just stop at the first question. They wanted to know it all. I love the change we saw as soon as we continued to teach. The Spirit was there, and God's plan of Happiness connected all the dot's for them. Saturday, Kenneth and Sergio were baptized. It was cool to get to visit them both everyday this week, even with a fever, to help them prepare for their Baptisms. They were both the last ones in their families to officially be baptized. It was cool to see how excited their families were for them. Now they can all start working on making it to the temple. Most of the rest of the week I spent in bed with a fever, but it was cool to still see the miracles happen, even when we weren't able to do as much work. Something I've realized this week is change never stops or rather it shouldn't.
We teach the same thing everyday to people. Faith, Repentance, Baptism, Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and Enduring to the End. In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, this is the process by which we use the atonement of Jesus Christ and become more like him. The process by which we change our very natures. No matter who we are, we have stony places in our hearts that we can still change in order to become more of the person we are meant to be. It's a beautiful process that happens over and over again. I'm so grateful for His Atonement and the chance it gives me to become new and start unlimited times over. Love you all! Halong Kamo! Sister Adams Maayong gab-i sa inyo tanan. This week was SO good, even though I'm pretty sure I'm always saying that. Isa ka day this week we were out walking to Nabinay, one of our far areas, when a young woman on a motor stopped and said, "Hey I'm a member!!" She had just gotten back from Manila and was baptized while she was there. She asked us right then and there if we could go to teach her family. Of course we couldn't pass by the chance and we continued heading in the direction we were going because she said her house was close by. It was so FAR! As in, We walked for another couple miles to the middle of no where when we finally reached her house. As soon as we stepped into her house her 75 year old Lola (Grandma) went insane. She was jumping up and down, squealing and almost in tears, because she was so excited to see two white American girls...probably the first time in her life. The whole time she would pet and kiss our arms. It was the funniest thing ever! Wednesday we went over to teach the Dolar family. THE ENTIRE fam, and it went so good. They are one special family. Tiy is so sweet, and jumped right on board with the Gospel after hearing his wife and kids testify that they know it's true. We found out that it was Jonas's birthday the next day, and he seemed a little down because they didn't have anything to celebrate. Side note, here in the Philippines birthdays are HUGE, but it can be a burden, especially if a family barely has the money to get by day by day. So, the next day we bought a big cake and a basketball and brought it to their house early, so we could hide it there until later that night for Jonas. We scared Marissa as we came around the side of the house because she wasn't expecting us, but as soon as she saw what we brought, she and her mother-in-law had tears running down their cheeks. I have never felt so happy, or seen so much gratitude from someone for something that was as simple as a little cake and ball. Jonas's smile later that night made it even more worth it. I Love them so much. Later Saturday night we got transfer calls, and even when I knew what was coming and that I'd transfer, it still hurt, because I love this area and the people. I have loved getting to see the progression from day one until now. This week we had 10 people come to church, it was a little bittersweet haha.
I'm transferring to Bacolod and Sister Christensen from San Diego is my new companion. (I'm not sure how this is going to work because I've never been to the big city before....pray for me haha) I know Heavenly Father's plan is perfect no matter what it is, or if we understand. I'm ready to put my trust in Him in this next adventure. I know He is always there and hears and answers our prayers! Palangga ta kamo! Sister Adams The beginning of this week the weather was crazy! I guess there was a typhoon somewhere up North in Manila so we got some of the after effects. Apparently President Sumagpao sent out a text to stay inside, but the North part of the Island somehow didn't get the message. As we ended our last lesson of the day and headed outside, the rain and wind was CRAZY. It was the funniest thing trying to catch a ceres bus on the side of the highway as rain and wind pelted our faces, and by the time we finally got on a bus, we were soaked to the bone with mascara running down our faces! The beginning of this week we also got our phone stolen. We tried calling the next day after Zone Conference and a lady answered the phone. She kept asking who we were, and saying that it was her phone. She agreed that we could meet her, so we jumped on a tricycle to the place she said, with one little Restoration pamphlet. It turned out to be her phone, but she had picked up our sim card that someone else had thrown onto the ground near the market. Come to find out, she was actually a less active member, and was happy to return our sim card for a Restoration pamphlet haha. Even if we don't have the phone, it's a miracle we found the sim card. This week we also taught some amazing lessons.... I seriously love the Dolar family so much. They are so strong and this week they all accepted baptismal dates for August! I can't tell you how many times Marissa and I have looked at each other, and agreed that there is no way that she met us by chance, but by God's divine plan. I've never met someone that was so ready for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She and her oldest boys felt the spirit, and haven't questioned since then, no matter what trials they have faced since we first met. This week was a flashback to my last week in Hinigaran when we lost electricity for 5 days. The start of the week we ran out of water, and had a brown out for an entire day and a night. We all were dying with no fans, so we moved our mattresses to the top floor, and had a little camp out with the other sisters. After which, Sister Blakeslee now has over 70 bug bites up and down her arms... whoops! But besides all that, good news...we found JOHN CHRIS! At the beginning of the transfer as we were riding a tricycle home late one night, the man sitting in front turned around and yelled (because you could barely hear anything with the wind flying in our faces), "TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU BELIEVE". To say the least I was shocked, and in that moment I was wishing I had the 13 articles of faith memorized in Ilonggo haha. With me yelling against the wind, and spouting out our beliefs and him asking questions, I almost forgot we were where we needed to get off, so we came to a abrupt stop. I hurried and asked if we could go to his house and teach sometime. He said yes and as the tricycle pulled away, and I pulled out my planner to write his name and where he lived, we realized we could not remember what his last name was to save the life of us. It was just gone! Over the next couple weeks while being in Villa Luisa we gave it a couple shots at finding him but with no luck. We even had a tricycle driver named JJ, that we are teaching, volunteer to drive us up and down the streets of Villa Luisa asking if anyone knew John Chris (Em told me that Chris is not his last name and that people there often go by 2 first names). We were sad, because we knew he was ready to hear the gospel, but we never found him and just kind of gave up. This week as we were teaching a family, in came the one and only John Chris! I'm pretty sure I was in the middle of bearing my testimony of Joseph Smith, but had to stop, because I was so excited to see him. Right after that he wanted us to go over and share with his cute family. What was even more of a miracle, is that earlier that same day as we were passing by his house, his wife was outside and started talking with us. We gave a pass along card, and she said we could come back. Little did she know it would be that same day along with her husband. Everyday is such a testimony to me of how involved our Heavenly Father is in His missionary work. This week we also arranged for a member to pick up Marissa and her family because they live so far from the Church. We got a little nervous when we received a text from the members saying they went, but nobody was home. Next thing we know Marissa and her cute family came strolling into the church with smiles on their faces, a whole 45 minutes before church even starts. I guess they were so excited to come to church again that they didn't want to wait! It's been cool to see their testimonies growing. This week we shared a lesson late one night so the whole family could be there. We all crowded around a burning candle (because they don't have electricity) as rain poured outside. We shared about our living prophet, Russell M. Nelson and by the end we challenged them all to later that night pray to know if he is a true prophet. The oldest son JM looked a little confused, and then said he already knows he's a true prophet. We told him he should still pray, but I love how they already feel, and know the message is true even after teaching them for a little while. I love being a missionary and I love these people even more. Thanks for all the prayers and support! Kilala kamo sang Dios. Palangga niya kamo! Halong kamo always. Sister Adams CADIZ WEEK 3 Last week Sister Blakeslee asked me if it was really rainy season here in the Philippines, because it had barely rained since she got here. Well this week she got her answer. It rained so much that we sometimes had to walk through calf deep water to get from one place to the next. This week we had the chance to teach Marissa and her family again. She is the lady who ran out of her house and asked to be taught last week. I love her! She is a quiet example of what mothers sacrifice day in and day out for their children. We stopped by late one night, and we all huddled around the light of a little candle. We shared Luke 12:29-31 and had Marissa read. 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. As she read, she started crying. To her, these verses are literal. Sometimes they really don't know where a meal will come from, or how to pay for her kids to get to school. God knows she has need of these things, and that if she will put Him first, He will provide. She really put that faith to the test, and took her family to church this week, even though her house is really far away from the church. God is aware of us all and knows what we need the most. Tuesday and Wednesday this week I was in Bacolod, because President Sumagpao invited me to MLC (Missionary leadership training). Not sure what that will mean for the future, but it was so good and fun to be there with Sister Schenk and Sister Zollinger. 4th of July was so fun too! We made Hamburgers, fries, bought one really expensive bag of Doritos, and had root beer floats. While we cooked we all sang to the top of our lungs the national anthem lol. One thought I wanted to share quickly this week is something that stood out to me while at MLC. We watched the bible video, "Come follow me and I will make ye fishers of men" and after that we talked a lot about the potential we all have as sons and daughters of God. Our potential was all unlocked when we came here to earth, but it is really up to us whether or not we reach our full potential by letting our Heavenly Father mold and shape us into who he wants, and needs us to be. He can even take fishers and through his grace make mighty fishers of men. He has a perfect plan for us, and I feel as if we all agreed and discussed what we would need while here on earth to really truly reach that potential. His plan is perfect no matter how hard it gets. Love you all Palangga ta kamo! Take care always Halong kamo pirme Sister Adams Emily and Sister Miner are not supposed to email each other, mission rules. So, their mama's are the go betweens. I love Sister Miner!
awww thank you so much for sending this. I really do miss sister adams. Her name and memory will never die in this area. Every day we get people asking about her or reminding us about the really awesome missinary named Sister Adams. She is a legend here now. I am trying to follow her example and live up to her energy and love people as much as she does. She really is amazing! <3 -Sister Miner |
